Tributes were paid to Bishop James and his twenty year ministry in the area during the Festal Eucharist at which Bishop James preached his final sermon and presided at Holy Communion. Leading the well-wishers, the Bishop of Leeds, Nick Baines said “James’s ministry has been one of faithfulness and one of encouragement ................ we owe him a huge debt.” He added that despite Bishop James’s regional and national responsibilities and the many responsibilities of being a bishop, “when he shows up in your church, it is pretty evident that that’s the only time that matters and you are the only people that matter – and that’s a gift for which many people are very grateful.” Canon Michael Hepper, Area Dean of Wensley, gave a perspective from 1997 when James came to the former Diocese of Ripon as Director of Ministry and Training. “For me and for many of us, Bishop James has been a great source of inspiration and encouragement over the years. He lives out his faith with real enthusiasm, his joy is infectious, his commitment to the Lord, deep and genuine.” In response to the tributes and gifts, Bishop James said, “I want to say that I have had some amazing colleagues over the years..... Friendship, praying for one another, sharing together in the community has been a tremendous thing....... He also spoke of his sense of being prayed for, loved and welcomed by the people of the diocese. “That has been such an important part of my life and ministry in these years of being a bishop.... I want to thank you so much for your love and your prayers because we are all in this together and please God that he will bring fruit from what we have been at together.” Bishop James has now retired to live in Appleby in the Diocese of Carlisle. News from Hackforth and Hornby CE Primary School It is hard to believe that we are, already, in the middle of a busy summer term. Looking back to last term, our pupils enjoyed taking part in The Wensleydale Tournament of Music and Speech in March. Tazmin Bowes was awarded the Mary Palmer Cup for the highest mark in the junior section for Bible Reading and our junior choir enjoyed the experience of singing Only Remembered from War Horse, unaccompanied, in the wonderful surroundings of the Tennants Gardens Room in Leyburn. Linked to our studies of plants and living things, we are looking forward to a visit from Zoolab and a whole school trip to Foxglove Covert. As part of this study, and as part of our application for the Eco (silver) Award, we are developing our grounds to provide deluxe hotels for mini beasts in the area! Juniors will develop these studies further at the Countryside Day at Harrogate Show Ground. 7 Following our visit to the Royal Shakespeare’s Company’s production, juniors are preparing for our end of term presentation based on The Tempest. A Play in a Day session in the village hall will allow pupils to polish their performance with a professional actor. Pupils will also be taking part in the Armed Forces Day celebration on 15th June, allowing our service pupils to learn more about their parents’ jobs and to share the experience with their peers. We are looking to meeting representatives from all the services during an exciting day at Ypres Lines. All these events will be reported on our website and Facebook page. LIBRARY & COFFEE MORNINGS SPENNITHORNE CHURCH 10AM TO 12 NOON June 13 & 27 TUESDAYS July 11 & 25 Hunton & Arrathorne CP School News The school year enters its busy term for assessments and our Y6 are getting back to normal after working very hard during their SATs week. In April Classes 2 and 3 had the wonderful opportunity to perform with the African Children’s Choir at Richmond School with Richmond Methodist School and the choir from Richmond School; the energy and sound that was packed into the concert was incredible. It was very humbling for our children to hear about the start in life that some children have and to hear how important the chance of an education is for them, to ensure the best chances in life for them in the future. Many thanks to Jenny Ash for organising the event. To support their science work this term, Class 2 had a very interesting time at Foxglove Covert learning more about the life of bees and Class 1 are looking forward to their visit to Mini Explorers to see the farm animals there. As part of our small school cluster links, Mrs Saunders led an afternoon of activities based on a children’s book for Y2 children and next week our Y3 children will visit Hackforth and Hornby School for an afternoon of science activities. A judo taster session was very much enjoyed by all pupils earlier this month, much to their surprise, as they were a little bit nervous about what it might entail. Some have shown an interest in taking up the opportunity to join a judo club since then so it was definitely a good chance to try something new. 11 Simon & Grace's Liberia Update - May 2017 As we have bumped into people in recent weeks, an often heard greeting is, “Oh! Are you still here?” It has become apparent that it could still be some time until things come together so that our son Jonathan can have his heart operation. Although we are aware that whatever we write could change, one option we are considering, is to speed up our plans to go to Liberia with a view to returning for a few weeks when the operation is actually scheduled. Over the last months it has been great to share some of what we hope to be doing in Liberia with quite a few individuals, groups and Churches. We have also made progress in packing the things to have sea freighted to Liberia and disposed of other belongings. We continue to need God’s wisdom and patience, trusting that He will make the way clear for us. “For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for Him” (Isaiah 30:18) To receive our regular Newsletter please email us at [email protected] To support us financially,see:www.sim.co.uk/give .
