Quoits End Of Season Report 2018
Mid-table respectability for PB Quoits! After gaining promotion from the “B” Division of the Lower Dales Quoits League last season, 2018 turned out to be the Green Tree quoits team’s most successful season to date. Despite being mired in a relegation struggle for much of the season, spirits were high and the play improved continually. The quarter final of the Alan Bowen Shield was reached for the first time and the league campaign was finished with a flourish. Six victories in all, including emphatic wins in the last two matches, lifted them to a highest ever placing of fifth in the “A” Division. Just six years after the formation of the team, this is a great outcome and the players are optimistic about progressing further in 2019. A good deal of work has gone into building and maintaining the pitches behind the Green Tree and the club now boasts some of the best facilities in the league. The pitches played well all season and the floodlights drew much approval from visiting teams. The club was selected to host the final of the Alan Bowen Shield, which was played between Thrintoft and Willow Tree B (Leeming Bar). It was a very enjoyable night and a great exhibition of skilful play. None of this would be possible without the support of Bryan at the Green Tree. Thanks go to him for providing space for the pitches, and for the great beer and excellent after-match suppers. Quoits has been played in this part of the world for centuries but only a few of the PB players recall its origins. Most of the team, youthful or not, are quite new to the game. Anyone in the area who wishes to give it a try (male, female, young or old) will be made very welcome. The new season will start in April 2019 and a reminder will appear in the Village newsletter and on the the village website (patrickbrompton.com) before then. Please do feel free to come and have a go.
