The unifying factor is that feeling that something long looked forward to is over and let’s face it, for many people it is. Once the celebrations are over it seems as if people are in a state of limbo. Now we count the cost and not just in monetary terms; there is a painful awareness of weight put on. Then there is the realisation that people we celebrate with may change across the coming year, physically and mentally. This time next year some of those we love may no longer be with us. Let’s face it, none of us like change! Yet to me, change is what Christmas and New Year is all about. When our Lord Jesus came into the world, the world through Him would never be the same again. This year will see many changes, new ideas, new discoveries, new stories of kindness and goodness which will gladden our hearts. There will be cruelty and heartache too, which will remind us how lucky we are and should challenge us to be more compassionate, and generous to those less fortunate. So let me wish you all a very peaceful and happy New Year. God keep you safe and all those for whom you have a special care . CORNERSTONE PASTORAL CARE Cornerstone is here to provide a 'listening ministry' within a safe, accepting and confidential environment. Our aim is to give emotional and spiritual support to church members and the wider community. We also offer help and information concerning practical matters such as shopping, transport, odd jobs, etc. The pastoral team includes those who have had training in 'active listening' and who collectively have experience of – Hospital and Prison Chaplaincy, the Samaritans, Counselling and Nursing. All volunteers are insured and checked by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS – formerly CRB). It was a very happy, sociable event and much appreciated by all those who came. It was such a pleasure to be able to spend the majority of Christmas Day in such good company rather than being alone in my own home. With very grateful thanks to all. All equipment provided. Enquiries to John Tuck (Tel: 01969 624046). News from Hackforth and Hornby CE Primary School Pupils enjoyed a busy final week before Christmas. As well as a delicious Christmas Lunch, we had a Christmas Party with a difference, meeting Father Christmas as we rode on the Santa Special from Leeming Bar to Finghall Lane. Parents and friends were invited to our traditional Christingle Service in St Mary’s Church, during which school took a collection, allowing us to purchase over £75 worth of donations for The StoreHouse Food Bank in Richmond. Pupils also performed songs, including Only Remembered from War Horse, from our Christmas production, based on our World War 1 topic: Remembrance. All our pupils, including our youngest EYFS pupils, took part in this thoughtful presentation in Hackforth Village Hall on the final day of term. Pupils returned to school on 4th January. We are now looking forward to a junior trip to York Theatre Royal to see the Royal Shakespeare Company’s First Encounters production of The Tempest. This will prompt a study of the play and a whole school summer production during the summer term. Y5/6 pupils are looking forward to joining pupils from Hunton, Londonderry and Leeming and Kell Bank, as we visit London for a residential trip at the end of February. Let there be Light Christmas at St Mary’s, Hornby, this year was, as promised, very special. A huge thank you goes to Ian Schofield for providing the light show at our Christmas Eve Carol Service and Christmas Day Communion. Thanks also to Hunton Ladies Choir. Over 150 people of all ages enjoyed the Carol Service with mulled wine and nibbles afterwards, which gave a huge buzz to church and allowed many an exchange of news and festive wishes. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed. Spennithorne & Harmby Mothers’ Union Our meetings take place in The Village Hall at Harmby on the third Thursday of the month starting at 7 pm. The Old School House Leyburn Leyburn Arts & Community Centre As well as the usual Friday and first Tuesday of the month films, during February there is a special Family film event during half term, a mosaic making workshop, the community choir concert, and a Ukulele concert. The speaker is Stuart Huntingdon on Scottish Munroes. Stuart claims to a local 'munroe basher.' Guests are welcome for a small charge of £2, but free to members. The Society also has a walks programme and membership is £5 per year. INSTITUTION Calling everyone in the parish of St Mary. DO IT NOW – CONTACT - [email protected] Hunton & Arrathorne CP School 2016 finished with a lovely carol service at St Patrick’s, Patrick Brompton the week after our FS/Y1 class had entertained us all with their production of ‘Busy, Busy Bethlehem’. It was hard to remember that half of the children had only been with us since September when we saw them reading and singing in front of their families and friends. 2017 is getting off to a busy start. Our Y5/6 pupils are excitedly preparing for their residential visit to London with their peers from other local small primary schools. It will be an interesting mix of museums, galleries, boat trips, castles and musical theatre. We will soon be starting to learn our songs and readings for the Wensleydale Tournament of Song which we always look forward to. FS/Y1 will be sharing their learning with their families at their next DEEL day in February. As part of their outdoor studies they will be getting involved in the RSPB’s annual birdwatch and learning how to recognise the birds that come to use their birdfeeders. LIBRARY & COFFEE MORNINGS Spennithorne Church 10am to 12 noon February 14 & 28 TUESDAYS March 14 & 28 Dear readers Do you know where Monrovia is in Liberia? This is where we, Simon and Grace, are planning to go at the end of May.We both finished our paid work, in dentistry and nursing, at the end of November 2016. The goal of leaving in February was unrealistic and has been moved to the end of May. Yes, it is all a bit hectic! Simon is in the process of applying for his Dental License from the Liberia Medical & Dental Council. We are seeking those who will support us by praying for us and also those who will help us financially. We go to Liberia as volunteers and as such need to provide our own support. The SIM (Serving in Mission) team in Liberia have advised us that we need £2500 per month - to cover things like: daily living, admin.costs, health insurance and flights. In addition, we will need to set up home in Liberia; some things we will take with us, some we will buy in Liberia. Due to the poor state of accommodation on the hospital compound our house requires significant repairs totalling several thousand pounds. If you would like more details please ask. What will we be doing? Simon plans to work in the Trinity Dental Clinic. This is part of ELWA hospital in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, which is run by SIM. The clinic was opened in 2008, but there has been no qualified dentist there for the past three years. Simon will take a lead role in the clinic and also seek to develop ‘outreach’ clinics to more remote parts of the country, probably in association with Mission Aviation Fellowship. Grace has a variety of gifts and abilities and her exact role will be decided once we arrive in Liberia. In the meantime ... We await a date for Jonathan, our son's, open heart surgery which will take place shortly. He and his brother David plan to film the ‘event’ to produce a documentary and also raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. You can follow this at www.sixtimesopen.com Like to hear more? We loved it and have been eagerly awaiting the full performance. We are now very pleased to announce that Newton le Willows has been chosen as one of the three venues for the Show in Spring 2017: The Chef Show Saturday, 4th February 2017 at 7.30 pm Tickets: £10 (£5 under 16’s) Telephone Jane on 01677 450594 Backstage tales of what it’s like to work on a busy Saturday night in the local curry house. Two actors play multiple parts (inspired by interviews with real people in the trade). As part of the show, a local chef, will be offering a spicy cookery demonstration and at the end there is a chance to share the food prepared during the show, and to chat with the chef and the actors. A deliciously entertaining night out - the show is fast-paced, funny and very entertaining! The Green Room will be open for the PIN audience. St Gregory’s Crakehall New Service at St Gregory’s called ‘Simply Together’ at 11am on 26 February and 26 March A service led by lay people for adults and children, enjoying singing and fellowship. CHRISTMAS CARD TREE AT ST GREGORY'S Many thanks to all who used the Christmas Card Tree this Christmas and donated to Christian Aid Present Aid. £138 was raised enabling us to buy 2 goats which will help provide poor families with milk to drink and sell, earning them vital income for the future; 2 baskets of chicks will help 2 women who have fled conflict, to start their own chicken-rearing business to provide for their families; 2 hens will provide eggs for a person living with HIV to buy the nutritious food they need to help them stay healthy. Lastly 2 sets of fishing equipment which will change 2 struggling lives for ever by providing them with all the training and equipment they need to begin fishing for a living. It is wonderful that we can help so many people with things that will roll on to help many more over the years. Many thanks to our hosts Brian and Carole for the superb buffet which followed Lewis’s highly entertaining presentation. Having regained some momentum we hope to arrange another meeting before Easter – hopefully at a new venue within the parishes.
