Providing Relief: Special COVID Appeal
The Church in Sudan has much that it would like to do but often lacks the resources to achieve it. As a Diocese we work together with the church there through prayer and encouragement, giving some funding, and occasionally through providing expertise. All money given by churches here goes to Sudan as other expenses are paid for from our own diocesan funds. Send donations to our Diocesan Office marked ‘For Sudan’. There is a Diocesan donation button linked to Paypal found here. Remember on the second page to add a note saying it’s ‘for Sudan’. Cheques should be payable to Leeds DBF, and posted with a a note saying it’s ‘for Sudan’ to: Leeds Diocese Finance Dept, 17-19 York Place, Leeds LS1 2EX
BACS transfers should be made to Leeds Diocesan Board of Finance, sort code 09-02-22 account 10466302. Don’t forget to reference your donation as ‘for Sudan’. Please email sudanlinkcontact@gmail.com with news of what you have done so that we can track your donation through. We may be in touch with you to ask about Gift Aid, and whether you would like to be added to our Sudan Link e-News mailing list.
Sorghum collected from a food back in El ObeidOur Working Group, alarmed by the situation in Sudan at the moment, has made this our number one priority. High inflation coupled with the coronavirus outbreak is causing shortages of basic necessities. The church in Sudan is sometimes desperate for funds to help distressed people: the situation they currently face is becoming absolutely acute. There are no food banks in Sudan, and Islamic Aid customarily is not given to Christian believers.
In the past, we have sent funding to help the Church in its caring ministry, but have encouraged them to look for sustainable projects. Right now the need is too great. In the past, we have funded grinding mills and even an agricultural project, and we hope to get back to that, but in 2020 with overwhelming economic forces sapping the life of the country, we need simply to supply daily necessities.
Please pray for the Church in Sudan as they face great need with nothing in their hands.

 Church & Community
Bedale Community Library will reopen on Tuesday 11th August at 10 am. It will be open on Tuesdays and Fridays, 10-12 and 2-4. While at first, it will not be possible to browse, readers will be able to return books, to collect reservations made through NYCC’s Library Services website and there will also be a ‘Select and Collect’ service available on 01609 534 573. We hope to resume something like normal service as soon as possible.
Sadly, this year’s Hunton Steam Fair, due to take place on 12/13 September 2020, has been postponed until 11th and 12th September 2021.
Planning ahead: St Oswald’s Hauxwell hope to run their tombola in aid of the church during that weekend on 2021, so please continue to save any cosmetics, not subject to use by dates, that you would be happy to donate to us. Many thanks.

Summary. Don’t let Covid-19 defeat us. Come along and let’s enjoy ourselves! Thoughts From The Garden
    From Rev’d Laura
Hello! How are you? not in a general sense to describe you; friend, family member, retired, worker. The variants on that list are huge, and too often the one that really matters isn’t named You’. We are the children of God, precious in his sight and in this turbulent world it’s so easy to forget that one small statement which gives us such hope. At times you may feel as if it is all too much, so we find ourselves plodding through the days without a sense of purpose, and this year more than ever before, we have had to face very real challenges, locally, nationally and internationally too. So, we need a pathway which helps us to keep going, not just for the bad days but good ones too.
Perhaps you’ve found a little spot in the house where you made a special place, nothing fancy, a candle, a photograph or a memento mori from a holiday. For me, I’ve been re-connecting with my garden. I’ve always had somewhere to grow plants and I gain great strength and comfort from them, especially Roses. I remember the peace Rose, Mum and Dad planted after the war, it stood in pride of place in our small front garden, an absolute delight, and they would tell me of their experiences during that traumatic time.
Of course, varieties of Rose are very broad genus indeed, all stemming from the wild dog rose, known throughout the world, stretching along the hedgerow in our present home.
Which brings me back to
‘us’ part of humanity and as Christians, we all belong to a great family, called to allow God to prune us, like the rose, where necessary. To be trained as to where we can be used to God’s best advantage, and most of all to live our lives to the full in order that we may release the fragrance of Jesus. (2 Cor 2: 14) Into all our activities however simple or humble they may be.
God bless you all and by his mercy keep you safe.
The reading from 2 Cor 2:14
But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him.
A reflection on the rose
The fragrance of the rose is distilled to create a lingering, tantalising smell which always fades with the passage of time. The love of God revealed in Jesus never fades, never fails. We are called with thankful hearts to speak of that love, so all may hear and in hearing understand

A prayer for us all
Loving God,
Thank you for the gift of the good earth, The heavens, the seas, the universe,
All that is around us
Help us to look and really appreciate The many gifts you lay before us,
Even in unlikely or
Unpromising circumstances
Amen

Simon and Grace Stretton-Downes

Liberia News

Simon is a dentist leading a team at a clinic at the Eternal Love Winning All (ELWA) Hospital in Monrovia. Grace is a nurse and will support Simon as well as seeking God’s direction for her role in the mission field. The couple are sent by St Gregory’s Church, Crakehall and are working for Serving In Mission (SIM)
Rosemary Gaven is our local contact and keeps us update with the news they send.
Simon is very busy at the dental clinic, he has done 4 broken jaw surgeries in the last 3
weeks - this is half a days work each time. They are trying to get the dental five year report and proposal for the next 5 years accepted and then to be able to start fundraising for the new opportunities proposed. On Monday morning, there was one patient with a large swelling with pus and two broken jaws from motorbike accidents. It is all very challenging trying to do one treatment when the apprentices need Simon to come and help them with their patients.
Grace is still making lots of food for working people although there is more movement about going into people
’s homes. She was the minute scribe for the SIM board meetings all day Friday and half of Saturday when she left to "attend" Brian’s funeral together with Simon. It was good for them to feel part of that closure for them from afar. They enjoyed two girl’s birthday parties last week as representative grandparents! Any opportunity for cake and celebration! She is still meeting with mothers of sick children to share and give mothering advice. She is also restarting the nursing chart audits and is hoping to get some senior nurses on this as well, for improved uptake.
They have cancelled flights and any thoughts of coming to UK in October for a short break due to all the uncertainties with Covid-19. So far Covid-19 numbers are slowly reducing around their area
There was less rain in the last week so they managed to get the washing dry on the line again. They are thankful to be there to meet the varied dental and nursing challenges but would love to be able to see family before too long. Many thanks for your prayers and love.
And Finally
From Rev’d Chris
Pew News will be taking a break for a few weeks and will be back on Thursday 10th September. You might have noticed that this edition is a bit longer than normal to cover the extra time that this issue is covering. Talking of time have you noticed that 2 of our church clocks seem a bit odd? Crakehall’s clock is currently stopped at 12 whilst we await much-needed work on the beam that supports the weights. Patrick Brompton, on the other hand, is currently 3hrs fast - having become very confused with the long power cut last week! We are working on how to reset the hour hand, but have at least managed to get the chiming back to normal - as the saying goes, watch this space!
I have been thinking about time quite a lot recently, how in the last few months’ time seems to have moved differently. I suppose it is because my normal routine has been so interrupted, not my day to day pattern but the bigger cycle. Whilst the world has continued and harvest has rolled around we have missed so many markers on the journey that I still feel somewhat trapped as if I am still waiting for something that my mind knows as already happened. I felt this most keenly at Easter and at Lamas Tide. Easter is understandable but Lamas I was not expecting. I think it might be that it marks the anniversary of my starting here in these parishes. Three years ago, my first Sunday service at St Patrick’s was a Lamas celebration, a time to give the first fruit of the harvest to God as a thank-offering. But this year like all of our special rural services that to simply slipped by unmarked.
I think this discombobulation was highlighted for me on the 5th when we would normally have celebrated St Oswald’s day at Hauxwell and our brief impromptu gathering that evening to give thanks for our new notice board in a way was oddly reassuring. Not that things are anything like back to normal, but that we will find a new normal. That we can look back at the past and thank those who shaped our shared journey whilst also getting excited about the journey ahead of us.
So from me, a massive thank you to all who provided for our new sign and to all in the Benefice for our shared journey. We have achieved much in the last three years and there is still remains much to be written in our shared journey as we walk with Christ together.
